Sundial Theatre: COVID-19 Info and FAQ

Below is an FAQ of the main questions we have been asked around COVID-19. All of our protective measures are based directly on the guidance from Public Health England and the Government.

We will email visitors who have bought tickets prior to each show with detailed and up to date guidance on everything you need to know before your visit. If you have any further questions please don’t hesitate to email us at where we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Q: Do I need to wear a mask?

A: Unless you are exempt from wearing one, you must wear a mask when inside the theatre and moving around the building. However, you do not need to wear one when seated in the bar area or when consuming food and drink.

Q: Is the venue socially distanced?

A: Yes, we have put in 2m social distancing everywhere we can and 1m where this is not viable. Where it is 1m, such as seating in the main theatre, we have taken extra precautionary measures to help protect our visitors. It is hard to manage social distancing within toilets, so we ask that you take extra care to check the toilet is free before entering.

Q: Is hand sanitizer available?

A: Yes, when you arrive there will be a hand sanitizer at the entrance of the bar area and at the entrance of the theatre. We also recommend hand washing so there will be plenty of soap in the toilets.

Q: If I book and the show is cancelled or postponed, will I get a refund?

A: If a show is cancelled you will automatically get a refund, so you do not need to contact us. If a show is postponed, we will let you know when a new date is set, and automatically transfer your tickets to the new date. If you are unable to make the new date let us know at least one week before the show and we will give you a refund.

Q: Is there a one-way system?

A: In many parts of the theatre we have put in one-way systems, mainly in areas where lots of people need to move. These will be clearly labelled, and barriers will help to guide you.

Q: Is the bar open?

A: Yes, we are implementing a new table service due to the latest guidelines. Each table will be numbered and a QR code and instructions will guide you to our new online menu where you can order to your table and pay online.

Q: Can we take our drink into the auditorium?

A: Yes, you are welcome to eat and drink in the auditorium but please only do so when seated. Please also make sure to put any rubbish in one of the many bins around the venue.

Q: Are the toilets open?

A: Yes, and we will have signage to additional toilets to help ease congestion.

Q: What are you doing about Test and Trace?

A: The lead booker is required to give their contact details when booking tickets. We will use the details in line with government guidance to work with NHS Test and Trace. You may also sign in with the NHS QR code when arriving at the theatre. We do not need to know of everyone if your group, but the lead booker is responsible for passing on details to NHS Test and Trace should any member of the group display symptoms.

Q: Can I visit if I have the symptoms of COVID-19?

A:  No, please do not visit if you are required to self-isolate or displaying any of the official symptoms of COVID-19.

Q: What happens if I get symptoms after visiting the Sundial?

A: Please contact NHS Test and Trace. They will liaise with us directly if needed and we will pass on details to NHS Test and Trace of anyone who may have been in contact where requested. NHS Test and Trace will then contact these people directly.

Q: Are you shutting at 10:00pm?

A: No, theatres are exempt from the 10:00pm curfew. However, we will close the bar after the last interval.

Q: What is the new capacity?

A: This will vary depending on group sizes but in general we are able to seat around 200 with social distancing between groups.

Q: Are you staggering arrival times?

A: No, although we suggest that you arrive in plenty of time to allow for ordering drinks and bar snacks and finding your seats.

Q: What are you doing about cleaning?

A: We have employed additional cleaners and all staff have received training about additional cleaning measures. We ask that you bin your rubbish to help keep the Sundial clean and use the roll and spray provided on the tables in the bar area to clean your table after use.

Q: Is the theatre well ventilated?

A: Yes, doors to the foyer will be open and we have extractor fans in the theatre that will be on. The theatre may be colder due to the extra ventilation so make sure to bring warm clothes.

Q: Can we book more than six tickets?

A: You can only do this if you are one household of more than six. If this is the case, please contact us directly at

Q: What happens if guidelines change?

A: We are constantly monitoring current guidance and will notify visitors of anything that they may need to be aware of.

Q: How will we know what to do when we arrive?
A: We will email the lead booker with everything they need to know several days before the show. Staff are always happy to help guide you when you get here if you have any questions.
